To take your self there, read Coleen’s blog from her trip aboard the river boat Chrystal Mahler:

Coleen and her husband Paul spent the Christmas break in Europe cruising aboard a luxurious Crystal river ship. A winter river cruise on the Rhine with ports of call in The Netherlands and Germany.

We spent a magical winter week aboard river boat Crystal Mahler; made even more special as we sailed during the Christmas festive season –  the ship was adorned with beautiful Christmas decorations. We embarked in Amsterdam, and spent the next seven days on The Rhine enjoying river cruising at its finest. Butler service for every suite, superb cuisine matched to regional wines, friendly service and wonderful social spaces.

It was a very different experience cruising and visiting river towns and cities during the winter months of December/January. The deciduous trees on the river banks are quite beautiful and mysterious looking  in winter.  Each town we visited had gorgeous Christmas decorations, people were in celebration mode and the holiday atmosphere was wonderful! The fairy-lit cobbled streets and cosy cafes were so inviting!

Each destination was very different –  Antwerp (where we had the option of visiting Brussels). Kinderdijk – a Dutch village known for its iconic 18th century windmills was fascinating.

My favourite place  was the fortified city of Nijmegen, Hollands oldest city. The city is full of magnificent historic buildings and centuries old plazas.

A highlight was spending New Years Eve in Cologne, Germany. At midnight we donned our warm coats and headed up to the vista deck to enjoy the amazing fireworks display. It was a fabulous evening!

Our cruise ended far too quickly back in Amsterdam. We then journeyed to Chur in Switzerland, and travelled through the majestic Swiss Alps aboard the Bernina Express train – but that is another travel story!
